What is Panopto? Panopto is an external tool that allows educators to record classes from multiple cameras, presentations, and screens. Content can be securely and easily shared between students and professors. Panopto also allows for live broadcasting and viewer behavior measuring on videos to ensure engagement. Panopto offers a secure video library that can be accessed and searched through by educators. Panopto can even be paired with Zoom for any recording and video saving purposes needed.

As a video content managing platform Panopto can be used:

  • To allow students to record and submit presentations to professors.
  • As a storage space for class videos, presentations, or lectures.
  • To track engagement among students on specific assignments.

Adding the Panopto tool to your Brightspace Course Offerring Site:

  1. Access your Brightspace course offering, 
  2. Select "Content" on the Navigation bar,
  3. Create a new Unit by clicking "+ New Unit" from the top of the left column in Content OR locate the Unit in which you would like to place the Panopto Integration link and skip to Step 5.
  4. If you create a new Unit, title it "Panopto,"
    1. Scroll down to the bottom to toggle the button from Hidden to "Visible" and
    2. Click "Save and Close"
  5. Next click on the new Panopto unit, click "Add Existing"
  6. Then click "External Tool Activities" under What would you like to add.
  7. Scroll down and Click "Panopto" under Insert an External Tool.
  8. The Panopto tool will now be displayed under the Panopto Unit on the left-hand navigation.
  9. Next scroll to the top to toggle the button from Hidden to "Visible"

 

Adding a Single Panopto Video

  1. Go to the course site that has the Panopto Integration.
  2. Click the Content Tool in the top navigation bar.
  3. Create a Unit or Lesson, or go to an existing Unit or Lesson.
  4. Click the Existing Activities button.
  5. Select Panopto Video 
  6. A window will appear with the available videos associated with the course. Select the video to add to the Unit or Lesson.

 

Embed a Single Panopto Video into a HTML Document
Panopto Videos can be embedded in HTML documents created as part of Content Tool, or anywhere that the rich text editor is available. 

  1. Go to the course site that has the Panopto Integration.
  2. Click the Content Tool in the top navigation bar.
  3. Create a Unit or Lesson, or go to an existing Unit or Lesson.
  4. Click the Upload/Create button.
  5. Click Create a File.
  6. A new screen will appear with the rich text editor. Enter a title for the file.
  7. Click the Insert Stuff button on the far left of the rich text editor menu.
  8. Scroll down and select Panopto Video Embed 
  9. A window will appear with the available videos associated with the course. Select the video to embed.
  10. The video has been embedded into the file.
  11. Click Save and Close 

Captioning video has shown to improve comprehension, attention to videos. Captions are particularly beneficial for all persons watching videos in their non-native language, and provide an equivalent viewing experience for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
